01
What context hints actually do
OpenAI defines context hints as additional information about what you offer, who it helps and when it may be useful. They help the system understand relevance but do not behave like exact-match keywords and cannot be used as delivery commands.
02
The Magnify context-hint framework
Magnify organizes context research around five elements so the hint is useful to both the platform and the marketer.
- Person — who has the problem?
- Situation — what is happening right now?
- Constraint — what makes the decision difficult?
- Desired outcome — what are they trying to achieve?
- Offer relevance — why is the product genuinely useful in that situation?
03
Weak vs strong context
A weak hint repeats a product category. A stronger hint adds a concrete customer situation. Instead of “CRM software,” describe the growing sales team losing inbound leads because follow-up is inconsistent across tools. The goal is not more words. It is more useful relevance.
04
Use separate ad groups for meaningfully different situations
If two buyer situations require different messaging or landing pages, they should usually not be collapsed into one ad group. This creates cleaner measurement and makes it easier to understand which conversation situations are producing useful outcomes.
05
A practical quality rubric
Score every hint on five dimensions: additional information, specificity, genuine relevance, factual accuracy and ad-group coherence. If the phrase merely repeats the category name or tries to command delivery, rewrite it.
- Additional — does it add something the ad or landing page does not already make obvious?
- Specific — does it describe a concrete feature, need or decision situation?
- Relevant — is there a real connection between the offer and that situation?
- Accurate — could the advertiser substantiate the statement today?
- Coherent — does it belong with the other hints and creative in the same ad group?
06
Context hints are not a search-term report
The marketer should resist importing every Google Ads mental model into ChatGPT Ads. A hint can help explain relevance without functioning as an exact-match keyword, and it does not prove that a particular conversation caused delivery. Optimization therefore needs campaign evidence, creative context and measurement — not only a list of phrases.
