Magnify ยท Margin Max
Performance Max Doesn't Have a Keyword Problem. It Has a Query-Control Problem.
I have managed Google Ads accounts for years, and I mentor ecommerce founders regularly. There is one problem I still see constantly, including in accounts managed by my own team: negative keywords.
This is slightly absurd when you think about it. Google has invested enormous amounts of engineering into understanding search intent. Matching has become increasingly semantic, automation decides more of where budgets are allocated, and Performance Max can identify opportunities across inventory that would have been impossible to manage manually a few years ago.
Yet controlling where we do not want our money spent can still feel unnecessarily difficult. Performance Max has made that contradiction much more obvious.
The proposition behind PMax is reasonable. Give Google your products, assets, conversion data and business goals, and let its systems find conversions across its inventory. In the right account, that can work extremely well. The problem starts when Google's interpretation of valuable traffic and the advertiser's interpretation of valuable traffic are not exactly the same.
Google knows an incredible amount about users, searches and auctions. But there are things the business knows that Google either cannot see or cannot completely understand.
An ecommerce owner may care about margin, inventory, repeat purchase behavior, product seasonality or the strategic importance of a particular category. A lead-generation company may know that two leads with exactly the same reported CPA have completely different commercial value.
